Student Assistance Program
Substance Use & Mental Health
What is the Student Assistance Program (SAP)?
- The role of Student Assistance Professionals (SAPs) is to develop student’s assets, while supporting other school professionals and services and bridging the gap between prevention and treatment efforts in substance misuse issues.
- Integration of Substance Use Prevention into Coordinated School Health Initiatives is part of the landscape in Vermont. Many Vermont supervisory unions and school districts have created wellness teams to work on health-related policies, procedures, programs, and activities. These teams are often modeled after the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model. The integration of SAP programs within the CDC's Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model is crucial in its success.
- There are many different forms or work types of SAP programs in Vermont, including student assistance teams and a professional who is trained as a Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor, or Certified Prevention Specialist, or has equivalent certifications in key areas.
Who can benefit from additional support through the SAP program?
Anyone! Any student that is in need of or would like additional support with social and emotional challenges, family struggles, their mental health, or substance use related challenges. If you would like more information or have questions about counseling please reach out to Laurina Fullam.
